Southcoast VNA featured speaker at End-of-Life conference in the Azores

FAIRHAVEN, Mass. — Southcoast™ Visiting Nurse Association, known in the community as Southcoast VNA, was recently part of an End-of-Life conference on Hospice & Palliative Care that took place in St. Michael, Azores.

Mandy Dunn, Hospice Consultant for Southcoast VNA, was a featured presenter at this first-time event. Dunn spoke about hospice and palliative care services offered in the United States. The entire program focused on finding better ways to support terminally ill patients and their families as they approach end of life. Other presenters discussed palliate care and mercy, special services for palliative care, and sickness, death and grieving.

More than 100 people attended the conference, which took place on October 25, including high-profile government officials, physicians, nurses and other medical professionals from across the Azores and Portugal's mainland.

"So many people in the Azores have relatives in Southeastern Massachusetts," Dunn said. "This was an excellent opportunity for Southcoast VNA to help educate the Azorean community on the type of hospice and palliative care services we offer to their relatives in the United States.

"In-home, visiting nurse services can come as a surprise to those who have not experienced such care in their own community or culture. That is why this conference was so critical. Education on these types of services will help Azoreans better understand the type of care they may come across in the United States when visiting a sick loved one."

The conference was highlighted on Radio Television Portugal (RTP) throughout the Azores and in the United States. A video clip of the conference can be viewed online at
