Southcoast Hospitals' RAPPP program announces after school programming through October



NEW BEDFORD, Mass. — The Southcoast™ Hospitals' Responsible Attitudes toward Pregnancy, Parenting & Prevention (RAPPP) Program is hosting a series of after school activities beginning September 20 and running through October. Experienced teachers will also be available to help students with math, science, English and history homework.

Each day of the week will feature a different theme: Mystery Monday, arts & crafts on Tuesday, newsletter on Wednesday, cultural day on Thursday and Fitness Friday. The following is the list of activities scheduled through the end of October:

  • Thursday, September 20: Asian Fusion cuisine and help with English and history homework.

  • Friday, September 21: Xbox'ercise and Juicing for Health.

  • Monday, September 24: Movie Day.

  • Tuesday, September 25: Tie-dye T-shirts and help with math and science homework.

  • Wednesday, September 26: Newsletter.

  • Thursday, September 27: Music Jam Day and help with English and history homework

  • Friday, September 28: Zumba and making trail mix.

  • Monday, October 1: Nail design/manicures and the Southcoast Health Van will provide free health screenings and education.

  • Tuesday, October 2: Scare crow making and help with math and science homework.

  • Wednesday, October 3: Newsletter.

  • Thursday, October 4: Irish step dancing and help with English and history homework.

  • Friday, October 5: Yoga and homemade granola.

  • Monday, October 8: CLOSED for Columbus Day.

  • Tuesday, October 9: Scrapbooking and help with math and science homework.

  • Wednesday, October 10: Newsletter.

  • Thursday, October 11: Make musical instruments and help with English and history homework.

  • Friday, October 12: Yoga, yogurt and fruit bars.

  • Monday, October 15: Games Day featuring Madden Xbox Tournament.

  • Tuesday, October 16: Duct tape designs and help with math and science homework.

  • Wednesday, October 17: Newsletter.

  • Thursday, October 18: Hispanic Culture cuisine and help with English and history homework.

  • Friday, October 19: Yoga and Juicing for Health.

  • Monday, October 22: Games Day featuring Madden Xbox Tournament.

  • Tuesday, October 23: Slate Halloween decoration and help with math and science homework.

  • Wednesday, October 24: Newsletter.

  • Thursday, October 25: Music Jam Day and help with English and history homework.

  • Friday, October 26: Yoga and Healthy Halloween Treats.

  • Monday, October 29: Scary Movie and the Southcoast Health Van will provide free health screenings and education.

  • Tuesday, October 30: Pumpkin carvings and help with math and science homework.

  • Wednesday, October 31: After school Halloween party with prizes and treats.

After school programs take place from 2:30 to 5 p.m. at Southcoast RAPPP's drop-in center at 1208 Ashley Boulevard in New Bedford. Programs are offered to tweens and teens age 11 to 19 and are free of charge. Snacks will be provided to all participants. Youth can register for upcoming activities by stopping by the RAPPP drop-in center, however registration is not required.

The Southcoast Hospitals' Responsible Attitudes toward Pregnancy, Parenting & Prevention (RAPPP) Program is an adolescent pregnancy prevention program designed to be used within the curriculum of the health or science department of high and junior high school systems. RAPPP also engages adolescents and young adults in the community through a number of outreach programs addressing youth risk behaviors.

Southcoast RAPPP has reached more than 84,000 teens and parents since its inception, including more than 50,000 teens through its in-school programs at area senior and junior high schools. Southcoast Hospitals Group — and specifically the Family Education Department at St. Luke's Hospital — developed, sponsors and administers the RAPPP Program in conjunction with school faculty and administration.
