St. Luke's Auxiliary announces 2008-2009 scholarship winners

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. — At its annual spring luncheon held June 2 at the Waterfront Grill of New Bedford, the St. Luke's Hospital Auxiliary awarded five $1,000 scholarships to area high school students entering college in the fall to pursue a career in the health care field.

The 2008-2009 Scholarship winners were:

  • Christopher Szala, a graduate of Dartmouth High School, who will be entering Boston University to become an anesthesiologist.

  • Matthew Macedo, a graduate of New Bedford High School, who will be attending the University of Massachusetts in Amherst to study pre-medicine.

  • James Nightingale, a graduate of New Bedford High School, who will be attending the University of Massachusetts in Amherst to study pre-medicine and go on to become a cardiothoracic surgeon.

  • Phillip Teves, a graduate of Bishop Stang High School, who will be attending Tufts University in Boston to study pre-medicine.

  • Rayana Grace, a graduate of New Bedford High School, who will be attending Boston College to study pre-medicine and go on to become a pediatrician.

    The St. Luke's Hospital Auxiliary scholarships are awarded annually to staff, Auxilians, volunteers or their spouses, children or grandchildren who are enrolled in an accredited health care program.

    The St. Luke's Hospital Auxiliary is a great way to become involved in your community hospital. The mission statement of Southcoast's Auxiliaries is to render services to the hospital, its patients and its tax-exempt subsidiaries and to assist Southcoast Hospitals Group in promoting the health and welfare of the communities it serves.
