FALL RIVER, Mass. — Southcoast Hospitals Group President Ronald B. Goodspeed, MD, MPH, FACP, FACPE, recently co-authored a book, entitled What If ... ? A Survival Guide for Physicians, intended to help medical students, residents and physicians successfully handle situations traditionally not covered by medical education and training.

The book was co-authored by Bruce Y. Lee, MD, Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Section of Decision Sciences and Clinical Systems Modeling at the University of Pittsburgh, and published by F.A. Davis Company of Philadelphia.

"Despite rigorous medical training, medical students, residents and physicians might not be adequately equipped to handle all the situations they might face in their professional and personal lives," Dr. Goodspeed said. "This book explains what to do in many of these situations, from the common to the unusual.

"Some of the scenarios we present deal with life-threatening situations. Some do not, but all are important and present challenges that physicians need to be able to face."

Dr. Goodspeed will donate all proceeds he earns from the book to Southcoast Hospitals Group.

What If ... ? provides advice and useful information for handling situations not only in a hospital setting but also in social settings or where there is limited or no access to a medical facility. Step-by-step instructions explain how to be prepared for the unexpected in any environment and possible steps for preventing the situation.

Dr. Goodspeed, who also serves as the President of the Board of Directors of the Massachusetts Coalition for the Prevention of Medical Errors, said the inspiration for writing the book was directly related to his passion for providing patients with the highest quality care possible.

"Quality care combines good clinical outcomes, compassionate care and a focus on safety for both the patient and the provider," he said. "It also extends beyond the traditional health care scenarios to unusual and unexpected scenarios and even unexpected locations. This book helps prepare physicians at all experience levels to provide quality care no matter what the circumstance."

Scenarios handled in the book include:

  • A patient brings a pet snake into the exam room.
  • Delivering a baby outside of a hospital.
  • Having to give a patient or family member bad news.
  • Providing medical care in a wilderness situation.
  • A patient refusing treatment.
  • A person collapsing at a social function.

"Physicians are generally thought to be able to handle any health-related situation under any circumstances just because they are physicians or will be soon," Dr. Goodspeed said. "And most physicians and medical students are willing to take on that responsibility. But they don't always have all the answers, especially with unusual problem or situations. This book contains the answers everyone needs to know but might be hesitant to ask."

What If ... ? is available through Amazon.com. Barnes & Noble's website, Borders Booksellers website and the publisher's website at www.fadavis.com.
