| The Food & Nutrition team from St. Luke's Hospital served its award-winning clam chowder at Gov. Deval Patrick's inaugural celebration on January 7 at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. | |
The "Tastes and Sounds of the Region" celebration is open to the public and marks the first time that a governor has included sites beyond Boston for his inaugural festivities. Doors for the main receptionopen at the university Campus Center at 5:30 p.m. Tickets of $20 per person are available on-line at www.jan4th.org.
At 5 p.m. in the university's Main Auditorium, young people from throughout southeastern Massachusetts will gather to reflect on the meaning of the phrase "Together We Can,'' which the new governor used throughout his campaign. Following the forum, the young people will join the main reception to greet the new governor and lieutenant governor.
In keeping with the civic engagement theme of the inaugural events, attendees are being asked to bring coats to donate to regional human service agencies. The coats will be distributed this winter to people in need.
The "Tastes and Sounds of the Region" will include: a special cake and other desserts prepared by students from vocational schools in New Bedford, Taunton, Fall River, and Rochester; a special buffet from Fall River's Ferris family, owners of the Venus de Milo in Swansea; award-winning clam chowder from St. Luke's Hospital (winner of the New Bedford Seaport Chowder Festival); Portuguese cuisine from the Sagres Restaurant in Fall River; Cape Verdean specialties from New Bedford and tea and cookies from the Tea Garden and Pastry Boutique of Randolph.
The 28-member Taunton High School Jazz Band will kick off the reception with sounds from the region. Also performing throughout the event will be the Theatre Group from Durfee High School in Fall River and musicians Chops Turner, Candida Rose, and Jackie Santos from New Bedford; John Harrison of the UMass Dartmouth Music Department, and Tony Funches, lead singer with the "The Platters".
Young people from around the region will gather at 5 p.m. in the university Auditorium for a special Youth Forum and discussion of civic involvement, a theme highlighted by Patrick in the months leading up to the election. The forum will include music performances and reflections on the phrase, "Together We Can.''
