FALL RIVER, Mass. — Southcoast Hospitals Group volunteers provided more than 85,000 hours of service during fiscal year 2005, saving the hospital approximately $1 million annually.
Volunteers at Charlton Memorial Hospital in Fall River, St. Luke's Hospital in New Bedford and Tobey Hospital in Wareham attended a special reception in their honor last month at White's of Westport. The 700 volunteers were recognized collectively for hours of in service and individually for milestone years of service.
"Today we are here to honor you, the men and women who volunteer at our hospitals and off-site locations. Your commitment and dedication to Southcoast is truly outstanding," said John B. Day, President & CEO of Southcoast Health System. "The dedicated service of our volunteers saves the hospitals approximately $1 million a year — funds that can be reinvested into providing quality health care and services for the communities of the South Coast region."
In-service volunteer hours refer to people who work in the hospital or serve at an affiliated location. Volunteers serve in a number of capacities including the information desk, gift shop, general office work, patient representatives, cafeteria, escorts, pastoral care and patient transport. They also provide services from their homes by sewing or knitting caps and blankets for our maternity units, lap robes and cardiac pillows.
"Southcoast's success is due largely to the efforts of our volunteers. We all realize how much time and talent you have contributed. Thank you again for the tremendous job," said Agatha St. Amour, Director of Volunteer Services for Southcoast Hospitals Group.
The following is a list of volunteers honored at the luncheon:
