NEW BEDFORD, Mass. — Southcoast Hospitals' RAPPP (Responsible Attitudes toward Pregnancy, Parenting & Prevention) program today announced the honorary "Heart of Fatherhood" award recipients.

"The Heart of Fatherhood Award is presented to individuals that exemplify family values and serve as role models at home and in their communities," said Cindy Guilbeault, Program Director of Southcoast Hospitals' RAPPP program. "We chose our two honorary recipients because of their strong dedication to family and their commitment to positive mentoring and youth development. Both individuals share a sincere genuineness in caring for others and are committed to addressing the needs and challenges facing our youth today."

The 2005 Honorary Heart of Fatherhood Award winners are:

  • Pete Braley, host of Pete Braley & Company, weekdays on WBSM (1420 AM) radio in New Bedford.

  • David Patten, NFL wide receiver who was part of the New England Patriots' Super Bowl championship team (now with the Washington Redskins).

Braley and Patten will be honored at an awards dinner ceremony on Tuesday, Oct. 25, from 6 to 10 p.m. at the Hawthorne Country Club, 970 Tucker Rd., North Dartmouth.

They will be joined by the 13 "Heart of Fatherhood" essay contest winners selected this past Father's Day. The winners were chosen from more than 400 submissions from across the South Coast region.

"We asked children ages 7 through 18 years old to explain how their fathers, step-fathers or father-like role models go 'above and beyond' the call of duty everyday," Guilbeault said. "What we received was a true outpouring of love and gratitude."

The Oct. 25 "Heart of Fatherhood" awards dinner is open to all ages and includes light hors d'oeuvres followed by a full course dinner reception of prime rib or baked stuffed chicken.

Renown humorist and national speaker, Joe Gandolfor or "America's DADvocate," will give a keynote address on the importance of being a father in the 21st Century.

Patrick Pass, running back for the New England Patriots and mentor for the Southcoast RAPPP program, will make a special award presentation along with Milton Scott of the National Fatherhood Initiative.

Seating is limited, prompt ticket purchase is suggested. Tickets cost $50 for adults and $12 for child chicken finger dinner.
