Dr. Campos brings a more than a decade of experience in cardiothoracic surgery, research and analysis to Southcoast's open heart surgery program. He most recently was in the division of cardiothoracic surgery at UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester and previously at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Harvard Medical School in Boston.
"I am absolutely thrilled to be joining the practice of cardiothoracic surgeons Drs. Hatton and Carr as well as the Southcoast Hospitals' Cardiac Team," Dr. Campos said. "This is an opportunity to bring all of the knowledge and skills that I have acquired at the major academic medical centers in Boston and Worcester to the communities of the South Coast region. I am excited to be part of Southcoast's effort to address the region's high incidence of heart disease and contribute my skills to such an extraordinary team."
Dr. Campos continues to have strong academic affiliations, currently serving as an Associate Professor in Surgery at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, also in Worcester, and previously on the faculty of Harvard Medical School in Boston.
Dr. Thomas Carr said the appointment of Dr. Campos to the Southcoast Hospitals medical staff is "beneficial for patients, families and the communities of the entire South Coast region."
"In the past, patients and their families had to travel great distances and at great hardship to receive much of their cardiac care. The Southcoast Cardiac Surgery team has clearly shown that this is no longer necessary," Dr. Carr said. "Patients in the South Coast region now receive world-class cardiac care in their own community as verified by the Harvard Medical School study which stated that heart surgery is as safe and the outcomes as good at Southcoast as any other facility in the state."
The study, presented on October 19, 2004, by researchers at Harvard Medical School to the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH), showed there is no statistical difference in standardized 30-day mortality rates among the cardiac surgery programs across the state. The report stated that the "two new programs in the state, Cape Cod Hospital and Charlton Memorial Hospital, performed as well as the other 11 hospitals in Massachusetts."
Dr. Campos is board certified by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery.
His major research interests have resulted in publications on the impact of lowering cholesterol in heart attack survivors, coronary artery surgery in women and the elderly and research in diabetes. He has also received national recognition for his research from the National Institutes of Health, the University of Minnesota and the American College of Surgeons.
A graduate of Dartmouth College in Hanover, N.H., Dr. Campos received his medical degree from Duke University School of Medicine in Durham, N.C. He completed a residency in general surgery at the University of Minnesota Health Center in Minneapolis, Minn., and a fellowship in thoracic surgery at New England Deaconess Hospital in Boston. He is a member of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, the Society of University Surgeons and a fellow of the American College of Surgeons.
Southcoast Hospitals Group performed the first open heart surgery in Southeastern Massachusetts in April 2002, bringing the lifesaving procedure to the region with the state's highest incidence of heart disease. Southcoast was the first of three community hospitals approved by the DPH to offer open heart surgery and elective coronary angioplasty at its Charlton Memorial Hospital site in Fall River. Southcoast's cardiac surgery program has brought unprecedented access to advanced cardiac services to the region and has received exemplary reviews and outstanding patient satisfaction since its inception.
