Alvin Marcovici, MD
Alvin Marcovici, MD, is a graduate of the Yale University School of Medicine and completed general surgery and neurological surgery residencies at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine-Montefiore Medical Center in New York City. He also completed a spine fellowship at Beth Israel Medical Center, New York.
He performs a range of highly complex neurosurgery and has completed research and published articles on topics that include brain tumor research and research on cerebral aneurysms.
Dr. Marcovici specializes in complex spine and brain procedures including the latest techniques in surgical treatment of scoliosis, spinal instability, brain tumors, aneurysms and surgical treatment of epilepsy and other neurological disorders.

Aubrey Okpaku, MD
Aubrey Okpaku, MD, is a graduate Harvard University and the University of Pennsylvania Medical School. He completed a surgical internship at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York City and also completed a residency there in Neurological Surgery.
Dr. Okpaku has extensive training in brain and spine surgery, including a full range of minimally invasive techniques including endoscopic cranial procedures. Dr. Okpaku also has specialized training in the surgical treatment of pituitary tumors and endoscopic treatment of hydrocephalus.

Matthew Philips, MD
Matthew Philips, MD, received his medical degree from Yale University School of Medicine in 1993. He completed a surgical internship at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and a neurosurgical residency, which included a Complex Spine Fellowship at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.
He is board certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgery. Dr. Phillips has done extensive research and published a number of journal articles on a variety of neurosurgical topics including surgical treatment of head trauma.
Dr. Philips specializes in complex spinal procedures including the latest techniques for spinal fusion and microsurgery. He also performs a range of brain surgery including surgical treatment for brain tumors, epilepsy, pituitary surgery and other neurological conditions.
A New Bedford native, he has been practicing in the South Coast since 2001.

Leslie Stern, MD
Leslie Stern, MD, is a graduate of the University of Manitoba, Faculty of Medicine in Canada. He completed a residence in general surgery at the Montreal General Hospital and a residency in neurological surgery at the Montreal Neurological Institute.
Dr. Stern is board certified in neurological surgery
He specializes in a full range of brain and spine surgery including minimally invasive spinal surgery. He practices in the Greater Fall River and Greater Taunton areas and has practiced neurosurgery in the region for over 20 years.

Southcoast's Brain/Spine surgical team also includes highly trained anesthesiologists and nurse anesthetists who do regular rotations at Boston teaching hospitals, along with specialized nurses, surgical technicians and a physician assistant who all specialize in neurosurgery.
The neurodiagnostic team includes technicians who have received specialized training in complex new technology such as evoked potential monitoring.
Neurologists — medical doctors who specialize in treating brain and spine disease — are also important members of the team.
After surgery, patients can benefit from an extensive spine rehab program with trained physical therapists. Rehab is individually designed to help each patient recover function and get you back to the activities you love.
