Neurourgery Patients

Richard Carmel
New Bedford
Epilepsy patient

Richard Carmel and his wife, Sandra, of New Bedford, have struggled with epilepsy for over 30 years.

Richard: Richard: "I started having epileptic seizures when I was 21. Through the years they got worse. I couldn't drive, couldn't work — I was at a dead end. It was even worse for my wife. She had to do everything."

Sandra: "It was constant worry, never knowing when or where he was going to have a seizure."

Richard: "I found a neurologist at Southcoast who is an expert in epilepsy and he told me about neurosurgery at Southcoast. I had all kinds of tests and they found the seizures were coming from the right side of my brain — the right temporal lobe. Everything was done right here. It made such a difference not having to go to Boston. The surgery was a great success. I've gone from having about one seizure every day to one a month."

Sandra: "It's so important to know there are procedures and great doctors and a great hospital right here. Richard's surgery has given us a totally new life."
