Neurosurgeon Matthew Philips, MD, has proved you can go home again — and get all the rewards of big city medicine with all the charm of small town life.
Dr. Philips grew up in New Bedford and nearby Dartmouth before pursuing his education at the Yale University School of Medicine followed by residency and a fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine.
When he decided to leave academia for a career in community medicine, he discovered he didn't have to sacrifice quality of life or the practice of top-of-the-line medicine to do so.
"Taking care of my own community made the most sense but I would not settle for doing anything but cutting edge neurosurgery," Dr. Philips said. "Southcoast made that possible."
For Dr. Philips, it was essential that a hospital could provide the technology and support services that his tertiary subspecialty required. Southcoast already had the infrastructure in place, including computer-guided technology and the support services that enabled him to perform the highest-level neurosurgery.
"Everyone really stepped up to the plate," he said. "In fact, I am doing better neurosurgery here than I have anyplace else and my patients get tremendous care."
Beyond the hospital walls, Dr. Philips' life is just as satisfying. He and his family enjoy a "fantastic" quality of life that includes boating, skiing and "the best striped bass fishing anywhere."
"It's all the advantages of close proximity to big cities without the hassles and expenses of living there," Dr. Philips said. "Returning to the South Coast has turned out to be a great decision both personally and professionally."
