Michelle Hughes, MD, got her first look at Charlton Memorial Hospital while she was completing rotations at the hospital during her training at Brown University. When it came time to decide where to establish her own practice, she found herself looking back
to the unique experience she enjoyed there.
"The people at Charlton really left a good impression on me," Dr. Hughes said. "Everyone was helpful and pleasant — plus the hospital had a good, solid reputation in the community."
Fourteen years later, and living in nearby Tiverton, R.I., with her husband and two sons, Dr. Hughes knows she made the right decision both for herself and for her family. "It's a really great place to raise children," Dr Hughes said.
Professionally, she appreciates working in a small-hospital setting where administration does not think small. While Charlton provides big-hospital amenities such as tumor boards and interventional radiology, its size fosters a familiarity that is seldom possible at large institutions. At Charlton, physicians get to know patients, staff and their colleagues better. Administration is accessible, willing to listen and committed to providing the best possible health care.
"They work to equip the hospital with the latest diagnostic tools and are very interested in improving programs and remaining as cutting-edge as possible," she said. "And physicians are allowed more autonomy. Here, you have the opportunity to build the practice you want to have. The only expectation is that you are a good clinician and take good care of your patients."
