For David Chesney, MD, practicing medicine on the South Coast is all about family.

In any given week, Dr. Chesney could be out on the Westport River, canoeing with his wife and three children. Or he may be visiting with extended family — just minutes away in nearby Rhode Island. Or he is back in his office, taking care of a mother and her baby, both in for a sick visit.

Before joining Southcoast Hospitals Group, a typical week for Dr. Chesney was very different. He completed a dual residency in internal medicine and pediatrics at the Cleveland Clinic. After four years in a large, urban medical center, Dr. Chesney knew he needed to have more of a connection to his patients.

"In my practice, I am able to oversee all aspects of a patient's care," he said. In many cases, Dr. Chesney takes care of a child, his parents and even his grandparents — all allowing him to get a more clear and complete picture of each patient.

Outside the office, Dr. Chesney finds the South Coast an outstanding place to raise a family, pointing to the many activities throughout the area. "In just one month, we were able to go to the beach, ride the bike path and enjoy a family show," he said.

With all that the South Coast has to offer, it is easy to see why the area attracts so many families. And it's no wonder that Dr. Chesney's practice has grown rapidly since he was hired in 1997.

"I get so much from living in this area," Dr. Chesney said. "It feels good to be able to give something back."
