With his family rooted in New England, Southcoast Health System seemed like a natural place for Thomas Carr, MD, to help establish a new cardiac surgery program. The deal was clinched for him when he learned that Southcoast was committed to making patient care, quality and safety a priority in bringing the best possible cardiac care to a region in urgent need.

"The South Coast region of Massachusetts has a very high incidence of risk factors for heart disease and actual cases of heart disease," Dr. Carr said. "The opportunity to build a cardiothoracic surgery program in a community where the need was so great was one I could not pass up."

Support that begins at the very top of the organization "makes practicing here easy and satisfying," Dr. Carr said. Southcoast boards, executive officers and administration are accessible and patient focused. Strong fundraising efforts provide access to the latest technology.

The opportunity to live near the ocean again was a bonus for someone who once lived in Hawaii and whose most recent residence had been upstate New York.

"My wife and I knew what it was like to have quality time near the ocean," he said. "Here we can have that without the congestion of a resort area and with so much more. We have easy access to Boston and Providence as well as to beautiful rural areas. Yet, we live on a beach in Fairhaven. Since our arrival here in April 2002, everything has turned out as I had hoped and dreamed."
