Virtual Tour

As is the case at all three Southcoast maternity units, moms are able to experience labor, delivery and recovery in one comfortable, home-like room.

At St. Luke's each LDR includes amenities such as a stereo system and television, along with private bath with showers.

Families spend their first few days in our comfortably decorated postpartum rooms, which includes a pull-out bed for dad (below), and private baths with showers (second below).

Families can gather in the family kitchen, where older siblings can eat with mom. A continental breakfast for mother and significant other is served each day from 6 to 9 a.m.

St. Luke's eight-bed special care nursery provides care for premature infants (32 weeks and older) or those with special health problems. These newborns get the best care possible from a team neonatologists, pediatricians, a pediatric cardiologist, occupational therapists, social workers and dedicated nurses.

Sandra Des Anjes cuddles baby, Jasenya, in the special care nursery along with the baby's dad, Dino DaCosta. A regular Child Development Clinic provides follow-up care to children born prematurely. A team of physical therapists and other specialists test and treat children for learning and motor skills disabilities. Children are also referred here for diagnosis and treatment of Attention Deficit Disorder and related problems.

Before newborns go home from the Special Care Nursery, families can spend time in an adjacent family room where parents can become comfortable caring for their baby's needs.

Cheryl Flynn, RN, gives discharge instructions to Ann and Rob Rosa as they prepare to go home with baby daughter, Jewel. When on-call, obstetricians remain in the hospital so they are readily available. An anesthesiologist is also in-house 24 hours a day.

St. Luke's also includes a pregnancy-monitoring unit staffed by one nurse for continuity in the administration of fetal non-stress tests. These are exams performed during pregnancy to test the health of the fetus.
