Family Education Classes
Southcoast offers a variety of childbirth classes to suit every new family’s needs. Pre-registration is required for all classes. Please call during the 16th week (10 to 12 weeks for multiples) of pregnancy to assure placement in the class you need. Not all classes are offered at all locations.
Many health insurance companies cover the cost of classes. Be sure to contact yours to ask about coverage.

Prepared Childbirth Series
This 5-week series will cover the changes occurring in the third trimester. These include the normal/unexpected processes of labor and birth, comfort measures and labor support. Also included is a tour of our facility and hospital procedures. Instruction on infant care and safety are included.
(This is a 4 week series at Tobey with Infant Care offered as a separate free class)
Evenings 6 to 8:30 p.m., $100 per couple
Birthing Boot Camp
A course designed for parents who prefer a faster pace. We offer the same content as in our Prepared Childbirth Series, but in a condensed, all-day class. Two $6 vouchers for lunch are provided. A tour of the Family Centered Unit, infant care and car-seat safety are included in this class. Please register when you are 18 to 20 weeks pregnant.

Newborn Care Class
This free class offers a hands-on approach to learning the basics of caring for your newborn. Offered every other month at Tobey Hospital. Registration is required. Call for dates and times.
This free class is designed for families that are planning to breast-feed or exploring their options regarding infant feeding choices. Topics include the benefits of breast-feeding, techniques and positions and the important benefits of contact with your baby. Expectant mothers and theirs partners are encouraged to attend before the birth of the baby. Please register at 18 to 20 weeks of pregnancy.
Baby Café/Breastfeeding Support Group
Call for dates & times
A friendly and comfortable drop-in session for pregnant and breast-feeding mothers to learn more about breast-feeding. Peer support and one-on-one help from specially trained health professionals is available, including professional lactation support.

Infant and Child CPR for Families and Friends
This course teaches adult, child and infant CPR for families/friends. Preregistration required. Please note that this does not provide a CPR certification. Classes are usually held at the Center for Women’s Health in Dartmouth.
$40/person, $60/two people.
A nationally recognized program designed to prepare adolescents ages 11 to 14 to babysit. Topics include babysitting as a business, safety of the sitter, developmental stages of children, behavior management, preventing problem behavior, injury prevention, basic first aid, choking infant and child rescue and CPR for infants and children. Class runs six times a year in the summer, spring and fall between the St Luke’s and Charlton campuses.
$65/student in advance to hold spot.
