About the Southcoast Health Sciences Libraries
The Health Sciences Library at the St. Luke's campus was established in 1954 by founding librarian Elizabeth S. Wildes. She added titles in the biomedical sciences and allied health materials to the original Nursing School Library collection. The Health Sciences Library at St. Luke's Hospital was born.
The Stillman Library at Tobey Hospital was named after Raymond D. Stillman, MD, at its inception in 1956. Dr. Stillman was Tobey's first Chief of Staff in 1938 and remained so for 22 years.
The Ida S. Charlton Medical Library was originally part of the Truesdale Hospital in Fall River. With a generous donation from the Charlton family, the original library was dismantled, moved and reconfigured to the first floor of Charlton Memorial Hospital.
Southcoast Libraries' goal is to meet the needs of Hospital personnel — medical and nursing staff, allied health care professionals and administrative teams — with quick and easy access to information from print, audiovisual and electronic resources.
Library Mission
Southcoast Health Sciences Libraries will provide timely access to information to meet the needs of all hospital personnel and often patients as well as community residents.
We will promote the hospital "caring" philosophy by providing the medical staff with the advanced biomedical concept of quality patient care and by supporting and encouraging employees' pursuit of continuting education through library resources and services.
In doing so, we will contribute actively to the achievement of the hospital's mission.
Library Privileges
Southcoast Health Sciences Libraries are open to all Southcoast Health System staff. Members of the community may gain access by special arrangement.
