Library Collections

The Health Sciences Library at all three sites of Southcoast Hospitals Group contains more than 2,000 biomedical, nursing and allied health texts and approximately 300 videotapes. It maintains subscriptions to over 300 journals and three audiocassette services.

At the St. Luke's Library, five computer stations are available for patron use; two computers are available at the Charlton Library; one is available at the Tobey Library.

Southcoast Library provides access to the Internet, GroupWise e-mail, Meditech and Microsoft Office. Other important databases include eMedicine, Micromedex, PubMed, UpToDate and the OVID databases (CINAHL, Cochrane and PsycInfo).

The library also has a special collection on consumer and women's health.

Book Collection:

You can search our book holdings on MassCat, an online catalog supported by the Massachusetts Regional Library System.

You can also search the Virtual Catalog, which allows you to search several library catalogs simultaneously for those books not in our collection.

Within Southcoast, the online catalog is also maintained on the hospital-wide intranet — go to Library Information / Books & Journals / Books.

Books are cataloged according to the NLM (National Library of Medicine) classification scheme. In the library, medical reference books and core books are shelved with circulating books for easy access.

Additionally, the Library provides access to online books through OVID, Stat!Ref (medical texts) and Stat!Ref2 (nursing texts).

Journal Collection

Journals are shelved alphabetically by title. The current year issues are displayed on periodical cases.

Center for Women's Health: A Resource Library

A resource library was established in 1997 at the Center for Women's Health at 300-B Faunce Corner Road in North Dartmouth. This library contains books, magazines, videotapes and pamphlets on a wide variety of healthcare topics written in laypeople's language.

Our mission is to promote the health and well-being of our community by providing medical information to meet the needs of the general public.
