Volunteering at Southcoast's Hospice & Palliative Care program

Volunteers at Southcoast's Hospice & Palliative Care program make a difference by providing practical and emotional support to our patients and their families. Their value is immeasurable.

The volunteers supplement the professional services offered by the Southcoast Hospice & Palliative Care Staff. They may simply sit with a patient or hold a patient's hand in a home, nursing home or hospital setting. Running errands, helping with meal preparation or encouraging patients to tell their life story, providing time for the caregivers to take care of her/himself, can be very supportive.

Our volunteers participate in a training program that includes the philosophy of hospice care, physical, emotional, social and spiritual issues that people can encounter at the end of life, effective communication skills and basic information about grief and loss. Volunteers are provided with continuing education and training.
