Cardiac Catheterization

Southcoast recently became the first community hospital south of Boston to consolidate all advanced cardiac services into "centers for excellence" in cardiac care.

The two centers, conveniently located at our Charlton and St. Luke's sites, offer area heart patients services and technology that is equal to that provided in large urban medical centers.

Cardiac catheterization

Southcoast hospitals perform more cardiac catheterizations than any community hospital system in the state, providing this advanced service to over 1,500 patients annually.

New state-of-the-art catheterization labs at the St. Luke's and Charlton sites offer area heart patients the same level of advanced diagnostic facilities available in Boston or Providence.

Cardiac catheterizations are performed when doctors suspect a serious heart vessel blockage. While viewing a computerized video screen, cardiologists are able to thread a thin catheter through an artery in the groin, maneuver the catheter up to the heart vessels and pinpoint blockages or other heart problems. The test can define what type of further treatment is needed.
