Heart Attack Quiz
You can reduce your risk of having a heart attack by being aware of your risk factors. Some you can't change or control, but others you can — by making a few changes in your daily lifestyle.
The following factors may increase your risk. Check all boxes that apply to you. If you check two or more boxes, see a health care provider for a complete assessment of your risks.
- Age and sex You are more at risk if you are a man over age 45 or a woman over 55 or you've passed menopause or had your ovaries removed and are not taking estrogen.
- Family history Your father, brother, mother or sister had a heart attack before age 55 OR your mother, father, sister, brother or grandparents had a stroke.
- You smoke or live or work with people who smoke tobacco every day.
- Your total cholesterol is 240 mg/dL or you don't know your level.
- Your HDL ("good" cholesterol) is less than 35 mg/dL OR you don't know your HDL cholesterol level.
- Your blood pressure is 140/90 or higher OR you've been told that your blood pressure is too high OR you don't know what your blood pressure is.
- You get less than a total of 30 minutes of physical activity on most days.
- You are 20 or more pounds overweight for your height and build.
- You have diabetes, a fasting blood sugar of 126 mg/dL or higher OR you need medicine to control your blood sugar.
- Medical History You have coronary artery disease OR you've had a heart attack OR you've had a stroke or TIA (stroke warning).
