photoQ. What if I have urge incontinence? What causes this type of incontinence?

A. Urge incontinence occurs when bladder muscles are too active and contract when they shouldn't. Causes of this condition include:

  • a recent history of urinary tract infections
  • nerve or muscle damage, sometimes from childbirth or surgery
  • conditions that harm bladder muscles or nerves, such as diabetes, stroke, and Parkinson's disease
  • bladder stones
  • bladder cancer.
