5. Stress may contribute to high blood pressure.

Some research indicates that high amounts of stress day-after-day can increase the risk of high blood pressure, as well as death from heart disease. This is especially true in people who have a family history of high blood pressure.

Relaxation therapies, such as meditation, may help counteract the effects of stress on blood pressure. But study results are mixed.
