1. There is nothing you can do to prevent high blood pressure.

You can help prevent high blood pressure, which also is called hypertension, with the following strategies:

  • Keep a healthy weight.
  • Be physically active.
  • Limit your salt and sodium use.
  • Don't smoke.
  • Drink alcohol only in moderation or not at all.
  • Eat a low-fat diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and dairy products.

Also, make sure you get enough calcium, magnesium, and potassium. Studies show that these three minerals can help protect against high blood pressure.

Foods high in calcium include dairy products and broccoli. Potassium-rich foods include yogurt, bananas, and prunes. Good sources of magnesium include whole-grains and green, leafy vegetables.
