Manage Your Medications
Many people with CHF take prescription drugs. Here are some tips to help you manage your medications:

  • Know the name of each of your medicines and their purpose, dosage, frequency, and side effects. Ask your doctor to give you a written medication schedule. Or create one yourself and ask your doctor to check it.
  • Use a pillbox that contains a week’s worth of medicines. That way you’ll know if you skip a dose.
  • Check with your doctor before taking any over-the-counter medicines. This includes pain relievers such as aspirin, acetaminophen, ibuprofen, and naproxen; cough, cold, or allergy medications; antacids; and laxatives. Any of these drugs could affect your heart, kidneys, blood pressure, or body fluids.
  • Do not take any herbal medicines without talking to your doctor first.
