You can try to reduce your child's exposure to things that can make asthma worse. These include:

  • common air-borne allergens, such as dust mites, animal dander, mold, and pollen
  • tobacco smoke and pollution
  • chemical fumes
  • cold air.

Here are some practical tips on how to make your home free of asthma triggers:

  • Wash bedding and stuffed toys once a week in hot water to get rid of dust mites. Also, use airtight covers on the pillow and mattress.
  • In the bedroom, remove carpets and use washable curtains or vinyl shades that you can clean with a wet cloth.
  • Keep pets out of your child's bedroom.
  • When the pollen or pollution levels are high, plan indoor activities with your child. For instance, play board games or have an indoor picnic.
  • Let your child choose a scarf to wear over his or her mouth and nose on cold days.
  • To zap mold, clean the bathroom and other damp spots with bleach and water.
  • Send smokers outside to light up.
