Sexual problems in older adults:
a) are a normal part of aging. It's rare for people to maintain active sex lives after age 65.
b) are commonly caused by physical or emotional problems.
c) are caused by changes in brain function that affect parts of the brain associated with sexual satisfaction.

Studies show that sex can remain a vital part of people's lives well into their 80s and beyond. A natural, age-related decrease in testosteronethe hormone that regulates the sex drive for men and womenmay account for a slow decrease in sexual desire and activity after age 55. However, more serious sexual problems in older adults are often caused by physical and emotional problems. These include:

  • medical conditions, such as diabetes, depression, and heart disease
  • prescription medications for hypertension and other medical problems
  • emotional issues, including grief, anxiety, and conflict with a partner.
