Depression is a problem for many older people. The condition is:
a) acceptable, given their age and illnesses.
b) just a normal part of growing older and is irreversible.
c) frequently treatable once its cause is pinpointed.

Depression can be treated successfully and should be taken seriously because it is a major risk factor for suicide. It is not a normal part of aging, although many older adults suffer from it. Adverse drug reactions, illness, grief, life events, and other factors can cause older people to become depressed.
