Weights Benefit All Women

Women ages 65 and older are the least likely group to do resistance exercises. But they should. Weight lifters maintain stronger muscles, sturdier bones and better balance. The best news? Almost anyone can do it. In a small study reported in Arthritis and Rheumatism, older women with fibromyalgia who performed strength training exercises enjoyed the same benefits as healthy women. As an added bonus, they experienced significant pain relief.

Spouses Who Give Care Should Get Support

Spouses caring for a partner with Alzheimer's often suffer from depression. Some of these spouse caregivers were assigned to six counseling sessions with a therapist and to a support group. Others were given advice upon request and information about available resources. Those assigned to counseling sessions and support groups experienced significantly less depression. These benefits lingered for as long as five years.
