Treatment Allows Patients to Relax
and Breathe While Wounds Heal

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT), offered at the new Southcoast Wound Care Center, can effectively treat certain infections and complex wounds. During HBOT, a patient lies inside a pressurized chamber and breathes pure oxygen. This promotes healing by pushing large amounts of oxygen through the blood to the tissues near the wound. Most HBOT sessions last about two hours.

"This can be the missing link needed to promote healing in difficult wounds," said Gerald Monchik, MD, a surgeon at Charlton Memorial Hospital. "The Southcoast Wound Care Center will be a valuable added resource for many of our patients."

Not every patient is a candidate for HBOT. But this treatment will be available to every Wound Care Center patient who could benefit from the enhanced oxygen delivery.
