A Helping Hand

A program introducing a number of complementary techniques to assist patients and their families in coping with a cancer diagnosis. Aromatherapy, therapeutic massage, relaxation techniques and meditation.

Support Group

Mondays, 4 to 5:30 p.m.
Ongoing support group for anyone who is posttreatment for a cancer diagnosis. This is offered to enable patients to deal with their feelings after treatment and with any effect the diagnosis and/or treatment has had on their lives. Call Barbara Pacheco, LISW, at 508-979-5858, ext. 4001.

Keep Children Active

Just like adults, children need exercise. Here are some suggestions:
  • Walk in the park.
  • Play some music and dance.
  • Walk in the zoo.

Southcoast offers a variety of childbirth classes to suit every new family’s needs. Please call during the 16th week (10 to 12 weeks for multiples) of pregnancy to ensure placement in the class you need. Not all classes are offered at all locations. Many health insurance companies cover the cost of these classes; be sure to contact yours to ask about coverage. Call the following numbers for information on classes offered at each location.

Hints for Healthy Gums

You can keep your gums healthy by:
  • Brushing and flossing each day.
  • Checking for red, swollen or bleeding gums.
  • Getting a checkup from a dentist regularly.

Babysitting 101

For boys and girls age 11 and up. Teaches children to become safer and more effective babysitters. CPR skills are taught. Children must attend three sessions and will receive a successful completion card and certificate.

Creative Movement

Mondays, 6 to 7 p.m.
This class will inspire children to become a team member and encourage them to be unique. There will be plenty of opportunities to cooperate in a group activity and to feel the energy of their peers. During each class, there will be time for each child to shine. For boys and girls ages 3 to 8.

Junior Fitness

Five training sessions
One-on-one training instruction for 10- to 15-year-olds. Safe exercise techniques and equipment operation are stressed. Sessions can be customized for young athletes.

Kids Fitness Volunteer Program

Volunteers, ages 13 to 18, wanted to participate in a beginner exercise program.
Participants will engage in cardiovascular exercise 3 times a week for 4 consecutive weeks. You must not be currently exercising regularly.

Pre-Swim Team

Wednesdays, 6:30 to 7:30 a.m.
Build endurance, practice your technique and make new friends. Sign up for 1 or 2 days a week.

Exercise Could Protect Men from Parkinson’s

The sooner you start, the better. In one study, men who exercised the most strenuously in early adulthood were 50 percent less likely to develop Parkinson’s disease later in life than the least active men.

Breathe Better Campaign

On October 1, Southcoast Hospitals Group announced a new healthy initiative that limits smoking at the three hospital sites and raises public awareness of the health risks associated with smoking and secondhand smoke. Called “Breathe Better,” the campaign is part of an ongoing effort to reduce smoking on hospital property and to educate employees and the public about the health benefits of quitting or reducing smoking.
