Organ Donation: A Precious Gift

Why Donate?

Nearly 100,000 people in the U.S. are waiting for a donated organ or tissue. Your gift may greatly improve — or even save — a life.

Many organs and tissues can be donated. You can choose to donate all organs and tissues that are needed, or you can designate certain ones.

No matter your age, you’re a potential donor. Some health conditions, such as active cancer, may exclude you. But many do not. So sign up even if you are not in perfect health. Before each transplant, medical staff assess donors’ suitability.

How to Become a Donor

It’s easy to become a donor. Sign up when you renew your driver’s license, or register online at the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles Web site: www.mass.gov/RMV. Motor vehicle departments in other states also register organ donors.

Make sure to tell your family about your wishes. Many agencies that coordinate organ donation require the family’s consent, even if the donor is registered. It’s also good to tell your doctor, religious leader and attorney so that they know you want to donate.
