New Emergency Department
Entrance Marks Midpoint of
St. Luke’s Expansion Project

Your Support Is Still Needed!

While the beautiful, new entrance to the ED may give the impression that work is complete, there is much more to do.
Southcoast Hospitals marked a major achievement in April — and the halfway point of the St. Luke’s expansion project — with the opening of the hospital’s new Emergency Department (ED) entrance.

“We are proud and excited to be at the halfway point in the dramatic redesign and expansion of the St. Luke’s Emergency Department,” said John B. Day, President and CEO of Southcoast Health System. “This is the first step in delivering on the promise we made to the New Bedford community when we began this project a year ago.”

While the beautiful, new entrance to the ED may give the impression that work is complete, there is much more to do. Construction continues inside the hospital as do efforts to fund that construction.

“Many community leaders have been most generous in supporting this important project,” said Barbara H. Mulville, CFRE, Vice President of External Affairs for Southcoast. “But we continue to need the help of everyone to make this effort a reality. Gifts of every amount are important to our success.”

The opening of the new entrance provides the community with 19 new private treatment bays in a modern ED design that will increase efficiency of care and comfort for patients and their families and ease delays in treatment. The remainder of the ED is being renovated in stages so as to minimize disruption in care.

Also opening this spring were the second, third and fourth floors of the Memorial Building, adding 27 new semiprivate and nine new private patient rooms, and the McBratney Amphitheater for medical education and a second cardiac catheterization lab. The $33 million project is scheduled for completion in the beginning of 2007.
