Prostate Cancer Screenings PlannedProstate cancer remains a leading cause of cancer death among American men. By the time symptoms appear the cancer may be advanced. Symptoms include urinary difficulties and pain or stiffness in the lower back, hips or thighs. But when diagnosed early, prostate cancer is highly treatable. Two simple methods are often used in screening for prostate cancer: a digital rectal examination and a blood test, in which a blood sample is tested for the presence of prostate specific antigen (PSA). About 80 percent of prostate cancers occur in men older than age 65. African-American men have double the risk of Caucasian men. Family history also increases risk. Research suggests a high-fat diet may be a factor as well. The Southcoast Hospitals Group regional cancer program will sponsor a series of three prostate cancer screening programs in Fall River, New Bedford and Wareham during September National Prostate Cancer month.
