People with type one diabetes reduced their blood sugar levels by 24 percent after six months of high-fiber nutrition. The daily diet included these foods:

  • Beans or peas
  • Apples, oranges or pears

Are “diet shakes” a good nutritional choice? Sometimes, say researchers — especially when it’s hard to change eating habits. In the study, women who lost weight were better able to keep it off a year later if they continued to replace one meal a day with a diet shake.

Walnuts can enhance the cholesterol-lowering power of the Mediterranean diet. Patients followed the diet — high in vegetables and fish and low in meat and eggs — for six weeks. Then, they replaced part of the fat with a daily serving of about 10 walnuts. After six more weeks, patients’ total cholesterol was cut by 4 percent, and “bad” cholesterol by another 6 percent.
