Construction Completed at St. Luke’s

Southcoast Health System marked a major achievement, in January, with the completion of the $33 million renovation and construction project at St. Luke’s Hospital.

The New St. Luke’s Hospital dramatically expands and redesigns the Emergency Department, adding 19 treatment bays, improving patient privacy and providing the latest high-tech medical equipment. The project also included renovations to patient floors, the McBratney Amphitheatre for medical education, a second cardiac catheterization lab and two new operating suites.

Philanthropic support for the project has been dramatic. The campaign’s original $5 million goal was easily surpassed. Gifts and pledges now total approximately $12 million and a final goal of $15 million has been set.

The campaign attracted the largest gift ever made to St. Luke’s. Earle P. “Chuck” Charlton II pledged $2 million from the Charlton Charitable Trusts — the first gift of its kind made by the Charlton Charitable Trusts to St. Luke’s Hospital, expanding the trust’s decadeslong legacy of giving to Charlton Memorial Hospital.

“This generous gift from the Charlton Charitable Trusts once again demonstrates the Charlton family’s support for Southcoast as the leading provider of health care in the region,” said John B. Day, President & CEO of Southcoast Health System. “Bringing the best possible services and technology to St. Luke’s benefits the entire area and Southcoast is thankful to Mr. Charlton for helping us in this endeavor.”
