Shadowing Sheds Light on Volunteer Opportunities

Interested in volunteering at Charlton, St. Luke’s or Tobey hospitals, but not sure if it is right for you? Try it out for a day through the Southcoast Hospitals Volunteer Shadow Program.

Howard Yenke, of Onset, tried the shadowing program at Tobey Hospital, following volunteer patient representative Amabel Barrows, and found the experience very valuable.

“It took away the factor of the unknown,” said the 67-year-old. “And it really solidified for me that I will enjoy being a patient representative. The experience was wonderful.”

“Volunteer shadowing is perfect for someone who is interested in volunteering but really doesn’t understand what it entails or may be hesitant about making the commitment,” said Agatha St. Amour, Director of Volunteers for Southcoast Hospitals Group. “And there is no obligation to perform any additional duty after shadowing.”

The program is open to adults only.

Volunteers are an integral and appreciated part of the Southcoast team, helping staff keep on top of the many tasks that need to be completed each day. Last year more than 750 volunteers contributed 103,000 hours of their time.
