Thanks to the generous support of local residents Southcoast Health System has placed automated external defibrillators (AEDs) in the first four of the 16 off-site locations chosen to receive the life-saving equipment.

"The generous support of area businesses and individual donors helped make it possible for Southcoast to make these potentially lifesaving devices more widely available," said Peter Guresh, Vice President, Allied Health Services, Southcoast Hospitals Group.

The devices, which allow trained, non-medical people to perform an emergency defibrillation, were placed at The Oncology Center and the Southcoast Surgery Center at Faunce Corner, Southcoast S.P.O.R.T. and Rehabilitation Services at Dartmouth Place and aboard the Southcoast Mobile Health Services Van.

The donors are: Maria Antonio of Dartmouth, who presented an AED to the Southcoast Surgery Center in memory of her husband Adelino Antonio; the New Bedford Chapter of the Prince Henry Society (presented by Jose Castelo); STAT Ambulance Services of New England (presented by Kevin Santos); and Myra Lopes of Fairhaven, who presented an AED to the Southcoast Mobile Health Services Van in memory of her sister, Betty Powers.

The purchase of the AED and staff training costs $2,500. An organization or individual who purchases an AED may choose to have a plate affixed to the case of the instrument with the name of a loved one or sponsoring company.

For more information on purchasing an AED, please call Southcoast Hospitals Philanthropy office at 508-961-5353 or e-mail Jeff Miller, Director of Corporate Development, at millerj@southcoast.org.
