Exercising just three days a week may fight the decline in heart and lung function caused by aging. Researchers analyzed 27 studies involving adults ages 46 to 90. They found that walking, jogging, or cycling for at least 30 minutes three days a week helped subjects maintain cardiovascular health well into their 70s and 80s.

Adults with mild balance disorders may be helped by tai chi. Patients ages 20 to 76 and older took an eight-week course in tai chi's slow, fluid motions. They showed strong improvement in balance measures such as holding a stance for 30 seconds without taking a step.

Archives of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery

A brisk walk is as effective as vigorous activity in reducing a woman's risk for stroke. Reseachers compared walking to activities such as running, aerobics, and racquetball. Three and a half hours per week of either type of exercise was linked to a 19% decline in total stroke risk.
