Southcoast’s Orthopedic Physicians Are Ready to Help You
Bones and joints give structure and
purpose to our bodies, allowing you
to stand, touch, jump, talk or blink an
eye. It’s easy to take bones and joints
for granted, until the body is injured or develops
aches or pains.
When bones and joints need help, Southcoast’s 20 highly skilled and experienced orthopedic physicians are ready to provide the very latest in surgical and medical procedures to restore you to health — no matter your level of activity or fitness.
Together they perform more than 2,600 procedures each year, making Southcoast one of the state’s largest providers of orthopedic care. Orthopedic services are available 24/7 at all three Southcoast hospital sites, offering patients the very latest treatments close to home.
Advances in Joint Replacement Surgery
Southcoast’s orthopedic surgeons use the latest technology, including computers and minimally invasive techniques to keep patients active and safe throughout their lives.
They use computers to help precisely align patients’ bones and joint implants. Similar to GPS tracking systems in cars, the computer system helps surgeons map each patient’s anatomy before and during surgery.
Partial knee replacement, now performed through small incisions, allows some patients a much quicker recovery and return to normal activities — with some patients walking the day of their surgery.
Sports Medicine
Advances in treatment for sports injuries are benefiting both the professional and recreational athlete. Minimally invasive surgical techniques are being used to treat injuries affecting the knee, shoulder and elbow joints.
Southcoast also has the largest school-based sports medicine program in New England with more than 15 athletic trainers serving 13 area high schools and colleges. Our Certified Athletic Trainers (ATCs) work in cooperation with physicians, physical therapists and other health professionals to help prevent and treat athletic injuries.
Specialty Surgery
Eight of Southcoast’s orthopedic surgeons have completed fellowships in specialties that include hand surgery, sports medicine and joint surgery. This enables Southcoast hospitals to offer complex orthopedic surgery often found only in larger teaching hospitals.
