The Three Phases of Cardiac Rehabilitation at Southcoast

Southcoast’s cardiac rehabilitation program helps patients recover from heart attack, angioplasty and open-heart surgery and aims to prevent future cardiac incidents.

Phase I — Inpatient Phase
Phase I takes place during a patient’s hospital stay. A multidisciplinary team educates patients on the conditions and helps them deal with physical and emotional issues so that they may return home.

Phase II — Outpatient Rehabilitation Phase
The second phase of cardiac rehabilitation begins in the home and proceeds to a hospital-based group setting. The patient takes part in an exercise program where their vital signs are regularly monitored. Phase II focuses on risk factor modification.

Phase III — Cardiac Maintenance
Phase III takes place at Southcoast’s Cardiac Rehabilitation site on GAR Highway in Somerset. It focuses on risk factor modification, exercise — including strength training and aerobic exercise — and social activities with other cardiopulmonary patients. The center is open Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 6:15 a.m. to 6 p.m. Visitors are welcome to tour the facility, by appointment, during those hours. For more information, call 508-675-3202.
