Drug Abuse Prevention: What Parents Can Do

One way to prevent drug abuse is to communicate with your children. That means being a good listener and getting and staying involved in your child’s schoolwork, recreation and social activities. It also means teaching your child as early as kindergarten about:

  • The dangers of using drugs.
  • How to avoid peer pressure.
  • How to make good decisions.
  • How to deal with difficult emotions.
  • How to build self-confidence.
  • How to develop positive interests.

The example you set is another key. By avoiding illegal drugs and limiting your own use of alcohol, cigarettes and medications, you can be the role model your child needs.
