Benefactor's Gift Enhances Breast Health Services at St.
Luke's
A generous
donation from the estate of Esther (Green) Eisenberg has resulted
in enhanced breast biopsy services at St. Luke's Hospital.
A gift made by the estate in memory of Mitchell and Ann Green
and Esther Eisenberg was used to purchase a stereotactic prone
table used by radiologists to perform needle biopsies, a minimally
invasive procedure that tests small breast lesions.
"The prone table positions the breast better for easier
examination and pinpointing of the needle insertion location,"
said Christine LoPiano, Mammography and Outreach Manager at Southcoast.
"It also requires less compression of the breast so that
the procedure is more comfortable for women.
"This type of biopsy enables us to remove breast tissue
without making a surgical incision," LoPiano said. "There
are no sutures and no recovery times, and for the 60 to 70 percent
of women whose biopsies show no malignancy, the only reminder
is a tiny mark about the size of a shaving nick.
"For those whose biopsies are positive for cancer, this
procedure allows additional flexibility. A woman can have a serious,
unrushed discussion with her doctor about her options before
having any surgery."
