About Fitness

Traditional sit-ups, abdominal crunches, and knees-to-your-chest moves can raise the risk of spinal fractures for osteoporosis patients. And these exercises are unsafe whether they’re done sitting, standing, or in water. It’s safer to choose weight-bearing exercises, such as walking or mild weight lifting. If you have osteoporosis, ask your doctor to help you update your workout to best meet your needs.

Walking during a golf game can be a safe and easy way to exercise. More than 60 middle-aged, male golfers walked the golf course twice weekly during a 20-week season. They played 18-hole games during this time. A control group was not encouraged to golf at all. Researchers found that the golfers raised their levels of HDL, or “good,” cholesterol, and improved their heart health. The golfers also gained trunk muscle endurance, which may reduce lower back problems.
