The Dr. Ronald Goodspeed Chair in Patient Safety & Quality
Our goal is to give to our patients the peace-of-mind that comes from knowing the latest medical advances, clinical skill and human compassion will be brought to bear to provide them the safest and best care available.
Southcoast is committed to building an environment where caregivers, all staff and leadership are given the opportunity to set and achieve the highest standards in patient safety and quality care.
The Goodspeed Chair
Honoring a career built upon an unwavering dedication to delivering top-quality, patient-driven care in a community setting, the Ronald B. Goodspeed, MD, Endowed Chair in Patient Safety & Quality is established at Southcoast Hospitals to assure these standards of practice remain and are enhanced for future generations of patients and caregivers.
Through scholarship, symposia and the stewardship of resources, The Goodspeed Chair will continue the endless pursuit of patient safety and quality care expressed by Dr. Goodspeed throughout his career.
The holder of the Goodspeed Chair, awarded biennially to a physician or senior member of the hospital clinical staff, will advocate for further elevation of the standards for patient safety and quality of care by:
- Scholarship Funds: Directing scholarship funds for certification and degree programs, particularly those that lead to a career in nursing.
- Symposium: Educating physicians, nurses, caregivers, staff and the public about issues that affect patient safety and quality in health care through forums and symposia.
- Stewardship: Helping raise funds and awareness for technological support of Southcoast's clinical departments to provide for patient safety and improved quality outcomes.
A Lifetime Passion
Quality and safety have been Dr. Goodspeed's driving passions since medical school.
As a hospital president, he was among the first of his peers to make the pursuit of and responsibility for quality pervasive throughout the organization. He was a pioneer in reporting quality measures to Southcoast's Boards of Trustees and educating trustees on their responsibility for the quality of service and the safety of all patients who passed through Southcoast's doors.
Dr. Goodspeed was named in 2006 as the President of the Board of Directors for the Prevention of Medical Errors based on his credentials, experience and dedication to quality patient care.
And he co-authored a book, What If ... Survival Guide for Physicians, in 2007 to help medical students, residents and physicians successfully handle situations traditionally not covered by medical education and training.
