Southcoast First in Mass. and R.I. to Implant World's Smallest Defibrillator

Southcoast Health recently became the first health system in Mass. and R.I. to successfully implant the new Boston Scientific INOGEN MINI ICD. Cardiologist Nitesh Sood, MD, performed the procedure at Charlton Memorial Hospital in Fall River.

The new ICD is the world’s smallest defibrillator and is noticeably more comfortable than its competitors. Having access to this groundbreaking technology is proving to be yet another beneficial asset to Southcoast and its patients.  As Dr. Sood said, “This is just one more example of the depth and breadth of cardiac services available locally at Southcoast Health hospitals.”

ICDs are designed to treat patients who suffer from heart failure and to provide protection to those at risk of sudden cardiac arrest.  According to the American Heart Association, sudden cardiac death is a leading cause of death in the United States.

Give Blood in June and Receive Free Bay Sox Tickets

Give Blood
During the month of June, the Southcoast Blood Bank will offer all blood donors two free tickets to a New Bedford Bay Sox home game.

Tickets are available to blood donors at all Southcoast blood donor locations, including the Southcoast Blood Bank located at St. Luke's Hospital and at Southcoast Blood Drives. Tickets can be used at any home game during the regular season but are not redeemable for cash. The Bay Sox play their home games at Paul Walsh Field in New Bedford. A complete schedule is available at www.nbbaysox.com.

You have a choice! Donate local. The Southcoast Blood Bank is the only blood donation venue that directly supports the South Coast communities' blood supply. When you donate blood at a Southcoast-sponsored blood drive you are helping to keep your local blood supply strong — so it is there when you need it.

Where to donate:

  • The Southcoast Blood Bank at St. Luke's Hospital, New Bedford, www.southcoast.org/bloodbank
  • Community Blood Drives — schedule can be found at the above link.

To host a blood drive, please call Catherine Alegria, Southcoast Blood Donor Coordinator, at 508-993-0430 or by email at alegriac@southcoast.org.
