The Southcoast Urgent Care Center located at 208 Mill Road in Fairhaven is now open to the public. The new urgent care center treats adults and children and is open seven days a week. Hours are Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Walk-ins are welcome with no appointment necessary.
Southcoast Urgent Care Center is staffed by a specialized team of physicians, nurses, and medical assistants and offers a full array of services including on-site radiology and laboratory services, basic orthopedics, gynecologic and minor surgical treatments as well as intravenous fluids and medications. Common reasons for visiting urgent care include: injuries such as strains, sprains and fractures; infections; animal bites; skin conditions; burns; lacerations; casting; contusions; cold or flu symptoms; immunizations and vaccinations. Southcoast Hospitals ranked among Top 10 percent of hospitals evaluated for Bariatric Surgery
Southcoast has been named among the top 10 percent of hospitals evaluated for bariatric surgery in 2013. Southcoast is also a Five-Star Recipient for Overall Bariatric Surgery for five years in a row and received the Healthgrades® Bariatric Surgery Excellence Award™ for 2013.
The ratings, awarded by Healthgrades — the leading online resource for comprehensive information about physicians and hospitals — found that patients having bariatric surgery at hospitals with Five-Star performance in bariatric surgery are 71 percent less likely to experience in-hospital complications than patients at hospitals with One-Star ranking. The report also identified that hospitals with higher volumes of surgery had lower complication rates (www.healthgrades.com/quality).
Southcoast Center for Weight Loss is the highest volume program in New England with care that far exceeds national quality standards. The program consistently performs significantly better than industry benchmarks, with a major complication rate at the low rate of approximately 1 percent. Keith Hovan named one of 130 Nonprofit Hospital and Health System CEOs to Know by Becker's Hospital Review

Keith A. Hovan. President and CEO of Southcoast Health System (New Bedford, Mass.). Mr. Hovan joined Southcoast Hospitals Group in June 2008 and became president of Southcoast Health System in 2010. He added CEO to his title in 2011. He served as executive vice president and COO of Danbury (Conn.) Hospital before joining Southcoast. Previously, he also served as vice president of clinical services at Montefiore Medical Center the Bronx in New York.

Southcoast VNA to host second annual Hope Takes Flight: A Butterfly Release on September 14
The community is invited to join Southcoast VNA for the second annual “Hope Takes Flight: A Butterfly Release” to benefit the agency’s Hospice program. Hope Takes Flight will take place on Saturday, September 14, from 2 to 4 p.m., with the butterfly release occurring at 2:30 p.m. The event will be held at the Fairhaven Senior Center, 229 Huttleston Avenue in Fairhaven, and will take place rain or shine.
The event is offered to honor and remember loved ones and friends. Activities will include musical performance by “Concordia” Choir, special recognition of a Hospice staff member and volunteer, inspirational readings, and a live butterfly release. A silent auction and prize raffle will be held throughout the afternoon and light refreshments will be served.
Butterflies to honor a loved one can be purchased for a $25 minimum donation. Butterflies purchased before August 23 will include a listing of a loved one’s name in the event program book. Tobey Hospital Guild to host “An Evening to Showcase the Arts” on September 21
The community is invited to join the Tobey Hospital Guild for its annual fundraising gala on Saturday, September 21, with proceeds to benefit the Guild’s $100,000 pledge to purchase new equipment at Tobey.
The theme of this year’s event is “Tobey Guild Showcases the Arts” with entertainment provided by opera diva Patrice Tiedemann, a nationally-known opera singer who will delight guests with a selection of music including well known arias. Entertainment will also include baritone Paul Soper; classical guitarist Coby Willamson, who performs regularly on Broadway; pianist Matthew Larson; harpist Judith Mitchell; and professional ballerinas from the Greg Salunier Dance Troupe.
The evening will begin with hors d’oeuvres and sparkling wine at 6 p.m. and will take place at Rachel’s Lakeside, 950 State Road in Dartmouth. Tickets are $100 per person and must be purchased in advance by calling Agatha St. Amour, at 508-961-5752. ($60 of the ticket price is tax deductable).
