Southcoast among first to perform new robotic surgery

Charlton Memorial Hospital became the first hospital south of Boston, including Rhode Island, to use da Vinci® Single-Site™ technology to perform a gallbladder removal.

The patient's gallbladder was removed through one tiny incision in the belly button, making the procedure virtually scarless.

Led by surgeon James Hermenegildo, MD, the Southcoast surgical team performed the gallbladder removal procedure, called a cholecystectomy, using Single-Site instruments on a da Vinci Si Surgical System.

Using robotic assistance, Dr. Hermenegildo removed the gallbladder through a one-inch incision. Dr. Hermenegildo is one of a small group of surgeons in the country who has been trained to perform the surgery.

The da Vinci robotic surgical system uses technology designed to give surgeons more precision and control during complex, minimally invasive procedures.

Southcoast receives prestigious cancer accreditation

Southcoast has received the highly regarded Approval with Commendation from the Commission on Cancer (CoC) of the American College of Surgeons (ACoS) for its system-wide oncology program.

The three-year Approval with Commendation, the highest rating awarded by the Commission on Cancer, is given only to those facilities that have voluntarily committed to providing the highest level of quality cancer care and that undergo a rigorous evaluation process and review of performance.

"Having this accreditation demonstrates to the community, especially our oncology patients, that we provide the highest-quality oncology service here at Southcoast and that we have met all of the national standards set by the American College of Surgeons," said Eileen Sugrue-McElearney, Vice President for Oncology Services at Southcoast Health System.

There are currently only 1,500 Commission on Cancer-approved oncology programs in the United States, representing just under 30 percent of the hospitals across the country.

World class pediatric care. At Southcoast.

Southcoast Health System and Boston Children's Hospital — the pediatric hospital ranked No. 1 in the nation — have established a new collaboration to provide enhanced local access to high-quality pediatric care to children and families across the region.

This collaboration means Boston Children's and its physicians will work with local physicians to provide hospital-based pediatric services for Southcoast at St. Luke's Hospital, enhancing quality and access to pediatric care for families on the South Coast.

Families can now receive state-of-the-art care in a newly renovated pediatric unit and a dedicated waiting and pediatric care area in the St. Luke's Emergency Department.
