Southcoast launches 2nd Health Van

Southcoast Health Van and staff

Southcoast has expanded its community outreach with the addition of a second Southcoast Health Van that will provide health screenings and health education throughout the region.

The new Southcoast Health Van will visit a number of highly visible and accessible sites throughout the region, offering blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol screenings, cancer screenings and education, bone density screenings, teen programs, pregnancy testing, immunizations and extensive preventive health education.

Van staff often help residents address harmful risk factors that may impact their health, make regular referrals for primary care and assist residents who are uninsured, helping to improve the health of under-served populations in the community.

The Southcoast Health Van serves an ethnically diverse population including Portuguese, Brazilian, Hispanic, Mayan Quechee and Cambodian immigrants, currently administering approximately 7,500 screenings each year.

Southcoast's first health van will now be referred to as the Southcoast Blood Donor Van and will continue to be in service, providing blood donation services and occasional screenings.

Our Southcoast physicians want to help you take a step toward better health. Literally!

Taking a brisk walk can do wonders for your health.

Walking just 30 minutes a day can decrease your risk of many health problems including heart disease, stroke and diabetes.

Our Southcoast physicians will be guiding you on your path to more healthful habits.

All participants will receive free pedometers and "Better Health Kits" that include information on nutrition and exercise.

The Take a Walk with a Southcoast Doc program will conduct monthly walks with Southcoast Physicians Group doctors throughout the South Coast region.

Join us for "Sharon's Walk"
in New Bedford on September 30

Southcoast and FUN 107 are teaming up again for Sharon's Walk, the third annual memorial walk and family-friendly event to honor Sharon and Elaine Fogaren.

Sharon's Walk will be held on Sunday, September 30, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Fort Taber, 1000 Rodney French Boulevard in New Bedford. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Southcoast Centers for Cancer Care.

Sharon's Walk is a 5-kilometer (3.1-mile) walk that will take place around Fort Taber. Registration begins at 9 a.m with the event kicking-off at 11 a.m. Participants are welcome to join the walk at any time during the event. The family friendly event includes entertainment, refreshments, children's activities, raffles and more. Free health screenings will also be provided by the Southcoast Centers for Cancer Care and the Southcoast Health Van.

Sharon Fogaren, the long time co-host of the "J.R. & Sharon" morning radio show on FUN 107, passed away after a brief illness in 2009 at the young age of 43. Sharon's mother, Elaine, passed away in 2004 after a battle with breast cancer. It was Sharon's dream to host a walk to honor her mother and to help raise awareness about breast cancer and local cancer care.

Panera's Pink Ribbon Bagel benefits Southcoast

Panera Bread, located at the Dartmouth Mall in North Dartmouth, is once again inviting its customers to join the fight against breast cancer by enjoying its signature Pink Ribbon Bagel for breakfast, lunch or dinner during national Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October.

In celebration of the Pink Ribbon Bagel Campaign's 11-year anniversary, 25 cents from each Pink Ribbon Bagel sold at the North Dartmouth bakery-cafe will be donated to Southcoast Hospitals' Women's Health Services. Panera North Dartmouth customers can also help by mentioning "Southcoast" or saying "Cater Pink" when placing a Catering order, where 10 percent of that catering order will be donated to Southcoast Hospitals' Women's Health Services.

Southcoast Hospitals is a primary provider of breast health services in the region and offers 100 percent digital mammography services at 11 locations throughout Southeastern Massachusetts. Southcoast Hospitals' Breast Imaging Centers are the only in the South Coast region to be designated as Centers of Excellence by the American College of Radiology.
