July 28: Take a Step for Healthy Kids


Southcoast Health System will host "Take a Step for Healthy Kids," a free community event focused on kids' health, on Saturday, July 28, in Fall River.

Join the Southcoast Cardiac Prevention Team from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Fall River Heritage State Park's Visitor's Center on Davol Street for fun-filled, healthy activities for kids.

Made possible through Southcoast Health System's Community Benefits program, the event will be held rain or shine. Parking is available at the Fall River Carousel building parking lot.

August 17: Cirque du St. Luke's

The Auxiliary of St. Luke's Hospital will hold its annual gala on Friday, August 17, with proceeds to benefit the Southcoast Centers for Cancer Care's Fairhaven site.

The theme of this year's event is "Cirque du St. Luke's" with entertainment provided by Overhead Arts Aerialist performing to music from Phantom of the Opera.

The event will kick off with hors d'oeuvres beginning at 6 p.m. and will take place at Cotali Mar Restaurante, 1178 Acushnet Avenue in New Bedford. Tickets are $75 per person and must be purchased in advance by calling 508-961-5752 ($40 of the ticket price is tax deductible). Southcoast Farmers' Markets: Good health starts by buying local


Southcoast Farmer's Market


Southcoast Health System will offer public farmers' markets this summer at each of the three Southcoast Hospitals sites — Charlton Memorial Hospital in Fall River, St. Luke's Hospital in New Bedford and Tobey Hospital in Wareham — and at the South Coast Business Center in Fairhaven.

Some of the local purveyors will include Apponagansett Farm, Cervelli Farm, Mama Stella's Original Cape Cod Seasoning, Sampson Farm and Westport Town Farm. Produce will range from lettuce, kale, celery and carrots to potatoes, tomatoes, cucumbers and zucchini.

Internal Medicine & Cardiology Associates joins Southcoast Physicians Group


Internal Medicine & Cardiology Associates (IMCA) has joined Southcoast Physicians Group, the largest group of physicians in the South Coast region with more than 245 multidisciplinary physicians, physician assistants and nurse practitioners.

As part of Southcoast Health System, IMCA and its 13 physicians will broaden their range of affiliations throughout Southeastern Massachusetts, allowing them to offer more choices and more coordinated care.

IMCA's practice includes five cardiologists: M. Wajid Baig, MD, FACC; Mark Gabry, MD, FACC; Jarvis Lambert, MD, FACC; Michael Meuth, MD, FACC, and Philip Sabra, MD, FACC. IMCA's five internal medicine physicians are: Miguel Brillantes, MD; Jason Diogo, MD; Diane Patrick, MD; Angela Simpson, MD; Shobita Sundar, MD, and Karl Zuzarte, MD. IMCA's three family practice physicians are Scott Lauermann, MD; Jane Li, MD, and Kenneth Piva, MD. IMCA also includes one nurse practitioner, Mark Richard.

IMCA's offices are located in Fall River at 1565 North Main Street, Suite 306, and in Westport at the Westport Family Medicine Center, 829 Main Road.

Both practices are accepting new patients.

Register now for 3rd annual "Sharon's Walk" on September 30


Southcoast and FUN 107 is teaming up again for Sharon's Walk, the third annual memorial walk and family-friendly event to honor Sharon and Elaine Fogaren.

The third annual "Sharon's Walk" will be held on Sunday, September 30, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Fort Taber, 1000 Rodney French Boulevard in New Bedford. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Southcoast Centers for Cancer Care.

Sharon's Walk is a 5-kilometer (3.1-mile) walk that will take place around Fort Taber. Registration begins at 9 a.m with the event kicking-off at 11 a.m. Participants are welcome to join the walk at any time during the event. The family friendly event includes entertainment, refreshments, children's activities, raffles and more. Free health screenings will also be provided by the Southcoast Centers for Cancer Care and the Southcoast Health Van.

Sharon Fogaren, the long time co-host of the "J.R. & Sharon" morning radio show on FUN 107, passed away after a brief illness in 2009 at the young age of 43. Sharon's mother, Elaine, passed away in 2004 after a battle with breast cancer. It was Sharon's dream to host a walk to honor her mother and to help raise awareness about breast cancer and local cancer care.
